Nissan manufacturing is moving their headquarters from Los Angeles to Franklin, TN. These are desirable white-collar jobs and as such are attracting lots of job seekers. Nissan reports that they have received more than 50,000 resumes to fill the 740 vacant jobs. So how do you like those odds? Do you know that in the Nashville, TN MSA 52.8% of the companies have 1-4 employees? Only 2.6% of the companies in this Metropolitan Statistical Area have even more than 99 employees. And yet we see this pattern repeatedly. A highly visible company will get 68 applications for every possible position. And then many of these seekers will wait for 6 months, putting their lives on hold, until that unwelcome notice arrives that they will not be needed. And then you’ll hear them talking in all the local bars about how no one is hiring and there are no opportunities.
Want to increase your chances dramatically? Identify 30-40 companies in the fewer than 99 employee group. That makes up 97.4% of all the companies out there. And that is without question where the new job growth has been strongest in the last 5 years. Start your 3-step contact process with these prospects. You may be one of two people who apply there this week. Follow up with a clear plan and you will find multiple opportunities.
When a major company announces in the papers that they are hiring you’ve already lost your best window of opportunity. Use an approach that most do not use and you will be surprised how many companies are looking for good candidates.
